Okay, here you go! This will be the first, of more than I care to think about, story about losing. Everyone by now has read the article about \”Is it a game of skill or not?\”,… right?
Well this one tells you that I may be one of the \”Donkeys\” you are always looking for at the table. I have to admit it, I sure felt like it in this particular game. Bad part is that it was at my \”room\”. What makes that bad, is that I have to stay there until everyone else leaves anyway…
Alright, here goes. We had a $60 buy in, (no Re-buy\’s, no Add-on\’s) game every Wednesday. Players start with $16,000 in chips. So we get the first hand dealt out, and the play went like this.
I am sitting to the dealers right. Catch pocket aces on the deal. Seat five (a good friend of mine) raises the blinds ($100-200) to $1500 dollars. Players fold to me and I jokingly ask if he had pocket aces. He said, \”I have a good hand and if you want to play, put in the $1500.\” I stewed in my juice for a few minutes and called. I thought I was being a good actor at the time. Dealer and table folds between us. Flop comes out with a 9-7-2 non suited. I am thinking, great! He goes \”all in\” and now I am left with a delima.
I also know what all of you are thinking now. Why in the heck didn\’t I raise him when he bet the $1500? Well, looking back on this one, I don\’t know either… However, now I am staring at an \”all in\” bet, first hand of a tournament, and I have pocket aces. Hmmmmmmmmm… Well, after taking entirely too long, I say to him, \”What you got over there Harold?\” He says, \”Put all your chips in there and you will find out!\” I told him, \”Harold, it\’s the first hand of the game, and I don\’t want to get put out!\”
He says, \”What do you have? Pocket aces?\” I said, \”Okay, I call!\” So he flops over pocket queens and I turn over my aces. So far, so good! The turn, and yes,… it still hurts, is a queen. I think it took a week to clean the top of my head off the ceiling. I just couldn\’t believe it. Here I am, first hand of a tournament, and OUT!!! Sheeeesh!!!
You know if I had had a gun, I don\’t know if I would have shot him or me to this day. Anyway, after going out to the parking lot for a few minutes, I came back to the game and dealt for them until guess who (Harold) won it. That was hard to pay out I don\’t mind telling you…
So, there is one of many hard luck stories I have to tell. I hope you enjoyed it!

Everyone watches all these poker players who are making a killing at the game of poker. Is it real? Absolutely! They actually make a living at playing the game of poker. Some of them make a fantastic living.
So you ask yourself, could I do that? It\’s a game you have been playing all your life. (That life could be fairly young and inexperienced, or pretty old and very experienced.) But still the question is, could you do it too?
Are you good enough? Do you know enough? Do you have enough money to survive? Do you have any idea what I am talking about? If you have ever really wondered about it, the answer to all these and many more questions is almost certainly, \”No!\”
Why would I say that? Because you are reading this and not playing poker! That\’s right, you aren\’t playing for a living. Poker Players, REAL POKER PLAYERS, are out there doing it! They do it every day, all day most of the time.
The only Players who aren\’t actually playing, are doing book tours, writing (or having \”ghost written\”) another book, playing in guest tournaments and that sort of thing. They have established themselves as \”pros\” and now they can live off their \”reputations\”.
That\’s what you want to though, right? Well, if you do,… YOU HAVE TO GO FOR IT!
The only other way you can get there (earn money from poker) is to be a dealer. The players know one thing, if they play much, there is always a dealer in the big money games. Players don\’t deal, they PLAY! The person who sits in the middle of every table and dispenses the cards is the one who will leave the game with more money in his pocket than he/she came with. That much is the only \”fact\” that is known before the game ever takes place!
So if you really want to make money-playing poker, BECOME A DEALER! There is no doubt you can make money every time you are engaged in the game, no shortage of games to deal, and where \”tipping\” occurs, you will usually make some really good money!
In normal \”cash games\”, dealers make a very nice living. How bad could it be? You are sitting, normally in an heated, watching something more interesting than most TV shows or movies, and seeing tons of money every time you work. You see as much cash as most tellers ever see at banks and a fair amount of it is going to end up in your pocket!
